I am doing this project for an assignment for class so please read carefully
I want to share a little study with you today concerning Jesus being the Son of God and the Son of David at the same time. In Mathew 22:41-46 we read this,
“While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “
Saying, what think you of Christ? Whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, how then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?”
Now we who are Christians know beyond a doubt that Jesus is the Son of God. We also know that He had always existed with the Father before He came to earth. Jesus asks a good question. How could He be David’s son and his Lord at the same time, well let’s read these same passages again with some notes from my study Bible. The notes will be in red.
“While the Pharisees were gathered together, “refers to Jesus speaking to the great crowd in the temple which contains many Pharisees. Jesus asked them concerning the most important question they will ever be ask because it pertains to the person of Christ, the Messiah. Saying, what think you of Christ? What were their thought concerning the Messiah whose son is he? He will now bring them face to face with His identity they say unto him, The Son of David. This is correct
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Messiah was David’s son – in his lineages – and as well, David’s Lord: this was revealed to David by Holy Spirit, and bring together Christ Humanity and Deity
The LORD said unto my Lord, this refers to God the Father speaking to God the Son Sit Thou on my right hand, refers to Christ being exalted to the highest position in Heaven, which immediately followed the ascension, till I make your enemies your footstool? Refers to all enemies being put down during the millennium and at its conclusion If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?” He is David’s Lord because He is God; He is David’s son because He became man through Mary of the house of David
Here we can truly see how Jesus is David’s son and David’s Lord as well. It is very important that we except Jesus as God and man. He was on the earth for 33 and1/2 years and some people even today have problems excepting that He was a man. They believe He was more like a spirit that went around doing good. But there is too much evidence to prove this wrong. He was born of a woman and thru out His life He ate, He, drank, and did just as any other person would do but without sin. When it came time for Him to begin His earthly ministry He went down to the
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Notice here that although Jesus was God it was lot until He was Baptize and the Spirit camp upon Him that He was able to fulfill His ministry here on this earth
On the other hand some may make the mistake; like the leaders of
When Jesus was speaking in Mathew 22:43-44 He was referring to Psalms 101:1 which says
Psa 110:1 <A Psalm of David.> The LORD Jehovah said unto my “ David’s ”Lord, here it is translated “Adonai” but should have been translated “Jehovah” Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. This verse covers the whole of the present period of time from Acts 1:9 to 2 Thess 1:7 and will be fulfilled at the second coming.
By this we can truly see that Jesus was both Man and God.
